How loud is rain on a metal roof?

Is there anything that can be done to reduce the noise other than standard insulation?

This was also a concern I had but honestly in ours it’s not much louder than a traditional shingle roof or hasn’t been in our case. We do have the roof insulated and if you have insulation above your ceiling it may not be any different than a shingle roof.

It might be a good idea to get extra insulation if it’s a major concern.

It’s good to hear that it’s not a major problem. I kind of had it in my head that we’d end up hearing the ping of every drop.
I think we’ll be going with added insulation just in case.

FWIW we have ~1\4" foil faced foam insulation in the barn.
This product is meant to prevent condensation drips inside… not so much on insulation value… maybe an R1. When it rains hard, you can definitely hear it. But the noise is muffled and not what I’d consider objectionable (close, but not quite). Real insulation… e.g. R38 (batts, blown, or sprayed) would be much quieter.

Noted! I’ve been trying to figure out which insulation is our best bet.

Traditional ceilings help too. You might be able to get near silence if you create an insulating enough space.
